Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC)

PEMFC is a type of fuel cell that uses a water-based acidic polymer membrane with additional platinum-based electrodes as the electrolyte. The cell responds at temperatures below 100°C and can also adapt electrical power to a dynamic power demand. Due to the low temperature of 100°C and the use of noble metal based electrodes, this type of fuel cell must be operated with pure hydrogen. The PEMFC cell currently uses the leading technology and is used in light duty vehicles, fleet vehicles and stationary applications.  In some cases, the PEMFC cell is also referred to as a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell.
